Painting of the week- The Crab

I want to continue to share some background about my paintings in this blog post called Painting of the Week. This week I’m featuring The Blue Claw Crab.

The Crab artwork has taken on a life of it’s own. I initially created this artwork for a fabric collection I envisioned. I have a degree in Surface Pattern Design from Syracuse University, where I learned to design for fabric, wall coverings, wrapping paper and more. Upon my graduation I got job in NYC as a Colorist for a fabric company that sold primarily to Interior Designers. For the next fifteen years I worked for many fabric, bedding and home accessory manufacturers. But I was always designing what they wanted, not designs of my own vision.

Once I started painting watercolors again in 2010 something new was emerging. My art. My voice. My brand and my style. I am a Long Island artist and live by the beach, so nautical images are everywhere. I especially like to paint watercolor landscapes and creatures of the sea. I imagined these design on fabrics and started painting the images in watercolor. The Crab was one of these designs. But suddenly after I painted it, I realized it could be a beautiful piece of wall art, notecards or dinnerware. I printed it in my first collection of Giclee prints. He is my best selling design for wall art and everyone just loves it.

I have used the image on fabrics that I print with Spoonflower and he is a top seller in my note card line too!
